Widely regarded as one of the greatest (and certainly most iconic) comedies in cinematic history. After his locomotive, “The General” was stolen, Buster Keaton embarks on a daring and comedic solo mission to retrieve it.
The film’s elaborate action sequences and visual storytelling highlight Keaton’s genius, blending humour with thrilling adventure and showcasing Keaton’s remarkable physical comedy and innovative stunts. Though initially overlooked, The General is now celebrated as a masterpiece of silent cinema.

The Train

PG | USA | 1964 | English

Director: John Frankenheimer
Date Shown: Sunday 26 January 2025

A gripping World War II thriller masterfully blending action and historical drama. Set in 1944, the film follows the French Resistance’s efforts to stop a Nazi officer, Colonel Von Waldheim (Paul Scofield), from transporting stolen art masterpieces to Germany aboard a train. Burt Lancaster stars as Labiche, a railway inspector reluctantly drawn into the resistance’s desperate mission.
In addition to the film’s raw authenticity (using real trains and practical effects to give a visceral intensity to the action sequences), themes of sacrifice and the value of art over human life are powerfully explored, challenging our perceptions of war and morality. The Train remains a timeless classic, celebrated for its suspenseful storytelling and poignant exploration of humanity amid conflict.
The film’s black-and-white cinematography enhances its gritty realism and makes it a must-see on a big screen.
Presented by Shrewsbury Film Society as part of Art of Action, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

12 | USA | 2000 | Mandarin, subtitled

Director: Ang Lee
Date Shown: Sunday 9 February 2025

Don’t make the mistake that I made and dismiss this film as yet another run-of-the mill Hollywood action movie. Visually stunning and groundbreaking, this film introduced the world to the magic and wonder of the 19th century Qing Dynasty in China. It follows the journey of two warriors, Li Mu Bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh), as they seek to recover a stolen sword, the Green Destiny, while navigating their suppressed feelings for one another.
Renowned for its stunning cinematography, breathtaking fight sequences, and deeply emotional narrative, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon became a global sensation. It won four Academy Awards and remains a landmark in world cinema for its poetic storytelling and cultural resonance.
Presented by Shrewsbury Film Society as part of Art of Action, a UK-wide film season supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network.
